The Tradition Continues

Iowa Barn Foundation Recognizes The Handsaker Barn

In 1853, William Handasker came to the States from England, settling in Iowa, he purchased the farmland from the government for $4 per acre. The homestead was built in 1875, and five years later the barn was constructed by J.W. Handsaker, great-grandfather of Gary Handsaker - Sheet Converter on B Crew. Gary and his mother, Gloria - 3M Retiree in 1988, now own and maintain the farm. The Handsaker Barn is a unique structure due to both its square Spartan shape and the fact that it is the second oldest standing barn in Iowa. Gary plans to remove the shingle siding on the barn and bring back the original wood and paint it red as it was originally. The Handsaker Barn was the cover feature in the Iowa Barn Foundation Magazine, Spring 2003 issue. Gary's barn is located immediately southeast of Fernald which is on E29 off US 65 north of Colo.
